Myanmar’s Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, meets with Heads of the United Nations agencies
On 11 May 2016, the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, met with Heads of the United Nations agencies and other international organisations (World Bank, ADB and ICRC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw. The Union Minister for Planning and Finance, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and other concerned officials also attended the meeting.
Discussion centred on the cooperation between Myanmar, the United Nations and other international organizations, and the new context of the Sustainable Development Goals. Six United Nations representatives who were in attendance are also members of the UN Network for Nutrition and Food Security – Bertrand Bainvel (UNICEF), Dr. Jorge Lunaj (World Health Organization), Domenico Scalpelli (World Food Programme, Chair of the UN Network for 2016 and also UN Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator a.i.), Bui Thi Lan (Food and Agriculture Organization), Jean D’Cunha (UN Women) and Dr. Paul Sender (UNOPS a.i.). They welcomed the Union Minister’s reference to malnutrition, and her emphasis on its relationship not only to food but also to knowledge of feeding practices and good dietary and care seeking choices. Moreover, she highlighted the important role that education plays to help improve the stunting situation in the country.
