Progress towards SUN 3.0 Strategic Objectives (SO)

SO.1

El Salvador has made great progress in early childhood care thanks to the commitment of the Government, which has prioritized the implementation of public policies and programmes to ensure comprehensive child development with an emphasis on nutrition-specific and -sensitive initiatives. The Crecer Juntos [Growing Together] Policy 2020–2030 includes initiatives focused on development, health and nutrition from early childhood to ensure comprehensive child development. The Nacer con Cariño [Born with Love] Law seeks to guarantee the well-being of newborns through specialized care for mothers and children and the promotion of breastfeeding as a mechanism to guarantee their full development.

SO.2

El Salvador’s 2021 improved food systems model sets out a road map to address food and nutrition conditions in a comprehensive and coordinated manner in response to the situation caused by climate events and COVID-19. The model includes priorities and strategies for improving the country’s food and nutrition security, which are the result of a national and subnational consultation process conducted with different sectors and target population groups. The funding and implementation of the actions of different partners and multisectoral platforms have been aligned with national priorities.

SO.3

In coordination with the Central American Integration System (SICA), El Salvador has improved actors’ capacity to analyse the food security situation through the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). In coordination with the National Council for Food and Nutrition Security (CONASAN), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Ministry of Health is developing a communication campaign for different population groups aimed at promoting good eating habits and physical activity among the population. Together with WFP, CONASAN is working to revise and improve the Food Security and Nutrition Information System.

SO.4

Comprehensive care initiatives, from conception through to early childhood, are being coordinated within the context of the Growing Together Policy 2020–2030, under the leadership of the First Lady of the Republic. An inter-institutional round table exists to coordinate health and nutrition policy initiatives, involving CONASAN, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health and other agencies involved in these issues. CONASAN works with the different multisectoral platforms to implement binding public policies.
