African Green Revolution Forum 2020: Feed the Cities, Grow the Continent

  |   SUN Country Network, SUN Donor Network

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summit of the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), which brings together thousands of delegates from governments, civil society, the private sector, the research community and development partners will be held virtually from 8 to 11 September 2020 and will be co-hosted by the Government of Rwanda and the AGRF Partners Group.

Organised under the leadership of H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, this year’s Summit comes at an unprecedented time when major African cities, especially those that mainly rely on imported food, face a looming hunger crisis following implementation of lockdowns in several countries to contain the spread of COVID-19. It also comes at a time where parts of Africa are faced with several other challenges including climate change, malnutrition, poverty, emergence of pests such as desert locusts and fall armyworms and now the coronavirus. The AGRF Summit will inspire and call for the adoption of concrete action and commitments from governments, the private sector, farmers and processors, and other stakeholders in the agriculture and food system sector.

The theme of the summit “Feed the Cities, Grow the Continent: Leveraging Urban Food Markets to Achieve Sustainable Food Systems in Africa”, is a call to action to rethink African food systems to deliver resilient, better nourished, and more prosperous outcomes for all. The outcomes of the Summit will help define the food systems Africa wants, as part of a multi-stakeholder vison for Africa and the world on the future of food and in view of the upcoming 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit. A full day will be dedicated to “Nutrition and Health” and will feature, among others, a symposium on “Advancing Gender and Nutrition” and panels examining policies, technologies, and investments that are needed to boost the demand for healthy, safe and diverse diets and fuel the production of nutritious foods.

Registration is free of charge and can be accessed here.

About the AGRF

The AGRF serves as the world’s premier forum for advancing Africa’s agricultural agenda, and at the turn of its 10th anniversary, the Forum is committed to taking its agenda and impact several notches higher. With five years left to achieve the vision and goals laid out in the Malabo Declaration and ten years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the AGRF recognises that it must drive a more intentional agenda with more partners. Through AGRF’s year-round programs and annual AGRF Summit, the Forum will use its full weight, resources, and partnerships to energize political will and drive the actions required to overcome the major challenges affecting the agriculture sector. With the right policies, programs, and investments, the AGRF community and stakeholders can grow Africa from the ground up to ensure this is Africa’s Century, driving agricultural transformation at the heart of economic transformation.
