On the 4th December 2014, The President of Mozambique, Armando Guebuza, visited the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a meeting to discuss solutions to the food security and nutrition challenges facing Mozambique today. He met with FAO Director-General, Jose Graziano da Silva at FAO’s Rome headquarters.

According to President Guebuza, Mozambique must not only raise food production to cope with  an increase in demand from its population, but must also help persuade the country’s citizens to choose and eat healthier food. On this, he said Mozambique can count on FAO’s ongoing assistance.

“At FAO we want to develop fisheries as an alternative source of protein as fish is a healthier and more nutritious food,” the FAO Director-General said. He referred to the commitment made by FAO to the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) – of which Mozambique is a member – during the 2012 CPLP Summit in Maputo to create and develop  National Councils on Food Security and Nutrition and also assist in developing  a common policy on food security and nutrition for CPLP member states.
