On 19th December 2014, the Government of Nepal, with the collaboration and support of the United Nations, launched a national Zero Hunger Challenge, a major initiative to eradicate hunger in the Himalayan country by 2025.

The National Zero Hunger Challenge (NZHC) was launched on behalf of the  Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, in the nation’s capital, by Minister for Urban Development Dr. Narayan Khadka.  Also participating in the launch was Hari Prasad Parajuli, the Minister of Agricultural Development, and other government ministers and representatives.

The Zero Hunger Challenge was initiated at global level by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. It requires comprehensive efforts to ensure that every man, woman and child enjoy their Right to Adequate Food; women are empowered; priority is given to family farming; and food systems everywhere are sustainable and resilient.

The challenge of Zero Hunger means:

  • Zero stunted children less than 2 years
  • 100% access to adequate food all year round
  • All food systems are sustainable
  • 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income
  • Zero loss or waste of food

During the event, a roadmap was presented by the Nepal Government for the formulation of a national action plan to meet the Zero Hunger Challenge in Nepal. Efforts towards achieving a national action plan for Zero Hunger will contribute to scaling up nutrition in the country.
