On 28th March 2015, the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly opened in Hanoi, Vietnam. The event, which ran for the next four days, brought together more than 1,300 delegates to cover issues of global concern, including international law, threats to peace and security and water issues. The issues covered were under the common theme of “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Actions”

During the event, the IPU-132 saw the adoption of the Hanoi Declaration. This serves as an official document which will be submitted to the 2015 Legislative Summit in Seattle in August and to the United Nations General Assembly in September. As part of the vision of the parliamentarians, the declaration states “People are more than taxpayers and consumers; they are citizens endowed with rights and responsibilities towards each other. We must invest in them – their health, nutrition, education and skills – as our most important resource.”
