Tanzania develops the first public expenditure review for nutrition
In the first half of 2014, the Government of Tanzania, with the technical and financial support of UNICEF, Irish Aid and the World Bank, has led the execution of the first ever Public Expenditure Review (PER) for nutrition to address the lack of data on the amount and type of funds allocated and spent on nutrition in Tanzania.
The PER reveals the challenges the Government of Tanzania faces in nutrition and identifies what should be done to finance the sector and improve the functional capacity of Tanzania for scaling up nutrition. These include
– Improving resource allocation for nutrition interventions
– Clarifying accountability to reduce fragmentation of interventions
– Improving capacity for nutrition with human resources and institutions
– Increasing alignment of interventions with the National Nutrition Strategy.
With high level recognition and commitment, the Government of Tanzania recognises that scaling up nutrition can have a very positive impact on health, education, work productivity and overall economic growth and development.
