The Government of Gambia launches a results based financing project with the World Bank
On 17 September 2014, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare launched a US$8.7 million grant from the World Bank to implement a 5-year results based financing project called the “Maternal and Child Nutrition and Health Results Project”. The project is being facilitated by the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) and will be implemented through 24 health facilities and 400 communities in Upper River, Central River and North Bank West Regions which account for approximately one third of the population.
The Health Minister, Omar Sey, said “It is of paramount importance that the project interventions will focus on strengthening community structures and the PHC (primary health care) system to enhance the quality and quantity of services by empowering individual women, communities and front line health workers to improve uptake, participation, caring practices and accountability for maternal and child nutrition and health outcomes,”. The Executive Director of the NaNA and SUN government Focal Point, Mr Modou Cheyassin Pall, said the project is another milestone in the development of health and nutrition in the country. Ministers of Youth and Sports, Fisheries, Agriculture, Regional Governors and National Assembly Members were present at the launch.
