About SUN Movement Global Gathering

The SUN Global Gathering in Rwanda, themed ‘NutritiON: Power the Change’, is the SUN Movement's flagship event. It will bring together over 900 stakeholders including policymakers, advocates, and practitioners from 66 member countries, to seize opportunities presented by the political agenda, especially in the lead up to the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) summit where high level commitments are expected to be made. The event will serve as a critical pivot point, aligning nutrition action amongst the different stakeholder groups to advocate for one strong and powerful voice for nutrition.

Reposition nutrition at the heart of the SDGs through national agendas

Champion nutrition's role at the core of the SDGs, highlighting required sectoral investments, particularly targeting the first 1000 days, as well as synergies with food systems transformation, climate action, gender equity, and other critical global concerns.

Accelerate country action

Take stock of promising approaches and results by countries against national nutrition and World Health Assembly targets, with a view to prioritize nutrition in sectoral interventions and national plans. Build on the power of the movement to bring together movement stakeholders to support the execution of those plans.

Explore opportunities to leverage greater financing for nutrition

Identify and leverage funding opportunities, showcasing successful models and bankable projects.

Showcase innovations

Highlight breakthroughs in nutrition - from cutting-edge products to groundbreaking research - with a view to increasing uptake of innovations at the country level.

The next SUN Movement Global Gathering will be held in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. After careful consideration, the Reference Group, appointed by the SUN Movement Executive Committee, has selected Rwanda as the host country for this flagship event.

The Reference Group meticulously reviewed and endorsed a comprehensive methodology to assess the candidates, and all applications received were truly exceptional. However, in accordance with the agreed methodology, Rwanda emerged as the top choice.

General info

Rwanda is a country known for its breathtaking scenery, often referred to as the land of a thousand hills. Its capital Kigali has been ranked the second most popular destination in Africa for hosting international conferences and events by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). Rwanda has made significant progress in the fight against malnutrition and today, the country is 'on course' to meet three of the global nutrition targets for which there was sufficient data to assess progress. However, despite the progress, the country is still struggling with high malnutrition rates: this is why, partners at the national level are putting nutrition high on Rwanda’s political and development agenda. Examples of these efforts include Rwanda’s inspiring school feeding programme, the recent launch of a two-year plan to reduce stunting and, of course, the hosting of the SUN Movement Global Gathering.

Theme

The theme of the 2024 Global Gathering will be "NutritiON: Power the Change". With this slogan the Movement urges its members to embrace the power of nutrition to address several of the SDG’s.

By embracing the power of nutrition, we can tackle global health disparities, eradicate malnutrition, and uplift lives. It's time to power up, ignite change, and make a lasting impact.
