June 13, 2025 - Last update: June 17, 2025The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat is convening a regional workshop in Somone, Senegal, for 19 SUN Francophone countries in Africa, bringing together government representatives, civil society, UN agencies, and partners to strengthen collaboration and share expertise across two key areas: strengthening monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL), and mobilizing innovative financing for nutrition.
📊 Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) Workshop: 23–25 June
This workshop, with support from the European Commission supported initiative EU4SUN and technical contributions from Capacity For Nutrition (C4N)-National Information Platforms for Nutrition (NPIN), is designed to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation capacity of SUN countries and foster a vibrant network of MEAL experts across the region.
Why now:
- Gaps in M&E systems limit real-time insights on progress.
- Recent calls for better data, including through Nutrition for Growth (N4G) commitments, underline the urgency.
- MEAL is a key pillar of the Abidjan Declaration Implementation Plan (2023–2025).
What to expect:
Participants will enhance their technical skills in data collection and analysis, improve monitoring of national nutrition commitments, and co-develop practical MEAL tools to support accountability and advocacy. Peer-to-peer exchanges will encourage cross-country learning and collaboration.
Who will join:
M&E managers from 12 SUN countries in West and Central Africa (approx. 30 participants).
💰 Financing for Nutrition Workshop: 25–27 June
This workshop, with support from the Finance Capacity Development Platform for SUN Countries (FCDP) and the European Commission supported initiatives Capacity For Nutrition (C4N), National Information Platforms for Nutrition (NPIN), and EU4SUN, will focus on innovative and sustainable financing solutions to drive nutrition impact across the region.
Why this matters:
- 282 million people in Africa are undernourished — 57 million more than before COVID-19.
- In 2024, 6.9 million people in West and Central Africa are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition.
- Stunting affects over 30% of children under five.
- The economic cost of child undernutrition reaches up to 16.5% of GDP.
What to expect:
Participants will exchange practical experiences, explore non-traditional funding opportunities, and learn from successful financing models, with sessions designed to boost understanding, collaboration, and financial accountability.

- Plenary sessions and expert panels

- Group work and mentoring
Who will join:
SUN Focal Points, representatives from Ministries of finance, agriculture, health, planning and cooperation, civil society, private sector, partners and experts from 19 SUN countries, alongside facilitators from partner agencies and experts in nutrition financing.
Language:
Simultaneous interpretation in English and Portuguese will be provided.

Financial monitoring and accountability in nutrition: focus on N4G
Objectives: exchange on budget monitoring methodologies and their application in monitoring N4G financial commitment
Introduction to innovative financing mechanisms
Objectives: general understanding of existing innovative financing mechanism & Sharing of national experiences; identifying challenges and opportunities
Non-traditional financing mechanisms for nutrition
Objectives: Explore non-traditional donors and associated targeted fundraising strategies; share experiences and lessons learned; identify challenges and opportunitie
