September 14, 2023 - Last update: March 21, 2024

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, target 12.3 – aims to half per-capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains. Target 16 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) among other issues, also calls for “halving global food waste by 2030".

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste will make a clear call to action for public and private entities to reduce food loss and waste toward transforming Agri-food systems.

A global hybrid event is to be convened by FAO and UNEP on 29 September at 16:00 HRS CEST, at FAO Headquarters, Rome (Sheikh Zayed Centre), to mark this fourth observance.
