The Academia and Research SUN Network in Kenya holds their first National Symposium

The Academia and Research SUN Network http://academiaresearchnetwork.co.ke/

From 23 to 24 November 2016, the Kenyan Academia and Research SUN Network held their inaugural National Nutrition Symposium at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi. The symposium focused on research, policy and program related themes that reflect innovative and new thinking which can be translated into action to improve food, nutrition and public health practice.

Sub-Themes included food and nutrition security and resilience, science for higher impact outcomes, leadership and advocacy in nutrition and food quality and safety. The overall outcome was to identify innovative and sustainable opportunities and priorities through evidence based research and advocacy to inform nutrition policy in Kenya. The event was supported by the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Education, Planning and Devolution and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).

At the event, Jennifer Adere, a Nutrition Specialist at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) presented findings from a background study that sought to understand the pathways through which livestock influence women’s empowerment and maternal and child nutrition. The study’s authors conclude that increased women’s engagement in production and sale of livestock products can significantly improve feeding practices, and the nutritional status of communities. About the Academia Research SUN Network

The Academia and Research SUN Network brings together the academia and scientific nutrition community in Kenya. This comprises of nutrition professionals working in public and private universities, research institutions and mid- level training colleges. The network was established in Nov 2015 with the aim of catalysing the scientific community to support Scaling up Nutrition efforts in Kenya alongside the other SUN networks that include donors, UN agencies, Civil Society organizations, business and government.
