In his opening address, King Letsie III stressed the importance of investing politically and financially in nutrition and reminded participants of the impact that stunting can have on nations. He announced that the new African Regional Nutrition Strategy, which mirrors the World Health Assembly Targets for Africa, shows the level of ambition that leaders on the continent have for every child. King Letsie called on all governments to renew and refresh their multi-sectoral nutrition plans and reminded all that there was potential to be harnessed from the private sector.

The event in Addis Ababa also represented an opportunity to share the results of the Cost of Hunger in Africa study and announce the commissioning of a second phase. Findings from the studies in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda were showcased at the event which also features speeches from UN agency representatives, who stressed the importance of a consistent and consolidated approach to nutrition which will help enable all children to reach their full potential.
