From 1 – 7 August 2015, the 2015 World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated in Bangladesh with a message from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasizing the need for breastfeeding and homemade food for infants at mothers’ workplaces. She announced that the government of Bangladesh has been ordered to introduce breastfeeding corners in government and non-government offices.

“There is no alternative to breastfeeding for the normal growth of children as it contains essential nutrients for the infants and helps increase resistance power” – Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister, Bangladesh and member of the SUN Movement Lead Group

She shared that the government had been working relentlessly for the last six years to increase the habit of breastfeeding and reach healthcare services for mothers and children to the doorsteps through community clinics and Upazila Health Complexes. She also urged the non-government organizations, banks, insurance companies, factories, shopping malls, professional bodies, trade unions and other human rights organizations to create awareness about the issue and to help mothers feed their infants at working places.

“If a mother can feed her infant at workplace her baby would be healthy and the mother will also be tension-free and more sincere to her work,” – Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister, Bangladesh and member of the SUN Movement Lead Group

In addition, Shastho Protidin, which is a daily Health programme of International Television Channel Ltd (NTV), broadcast a feature during the week about the benefits of breastfeeding.
