On 26th November 2014, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was held in Kathmandu, Nepal. During the event, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed, who is also a member of the SUN Movement Lead Group, spoke to participants and urged SAARC leaders to set aside their differences and work on collective strengths to bring prosperity to the people of the region.

Sheikh Hasina spoke about seven priority areas with the first area being poverty as common enemy hindering peace and development in the region. She highlights, as part of addressing poverty, that food and nutritional security remains a big challenge. Sheikh Hasina also said “Cooperation in increasing productivity of key cereals, inland fisheries and livestock, improving water efficiency in agriculture are crucial for attaining nutritional security of our people and eradicating poverty.”

The SAARC Charter was signed in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1985 by the heads of state from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, The Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The objectives of SAARC include the promotion of welfare, economic growth, social progress and cultural development for the people of South Asia. In addition to the promotion and strengthening of collective reliance, trust and collaboration for mutual assistance between the countries.
