On 27 June 2014, Focus1000, a non-governmental organisation in Sierra Leone, led the organisation of a two day workshop on Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) and immunization. The forum aimed to organize civil society organizations across the nation into a united force with one voice that engaged government and development partners with the SUN Movement, nutrition and health systems activities in Sierra Leone. The workshop included;

  • An update to partners on progress
  • Facilitation of experience sharing between organisations
  • Exchange of ideas from the various Districts
  • Initiation of a CSO mapping exercise
  • Planning the way forward for the SUN Movement and immunization.

The Director of Nutrition in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS) Madam Aminata Koroma said that nutrition remains a major impediment to the manpower and economic development of the country. Madam Koroma, who is also a SUN Government Focal Point, explained that alleviation of poor nutrition requires strong linkages with agriculture, markets, food consumption and health care.

The CEO of Focus1000, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh called on CSOs, the media and other stakeholders to come together and build up a complementary forum. He encouraged district representatives to update mechanisms to coordinate nutrition and immunization issues. Helen Keller International and Focus 1000 are co-chairing the CSO Platform on SUN and Immunization.
