On 15th June 2015, a conference was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to bring people together and share the latest research on food and nutrition. The event was led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and was the second of its kind to be held after the successful 2014 conference in New Dehli.

The event was a platform platform for learning and discussion around the challenging task of bringing diverse sectors together to improve maternal and child nutrition in Ethiopia. The event was opened by Bart Minten, program leader for the Ethiopia Strategy Support Programme (ESSP), Stuart Gillespie, CEO of Transform Nutrition and Ferew Lemma, from the Ethiopia Ministry of Health, who is also the SUN Government Focal Point.

With nearly 150 participants from diverse sectors and organisations, the conference strengthened the discourse and knowledge base on approaches to strengthen actions within and across different sectors for nutrition.

The final remarks came from Stuart Gillespie, describing this necessity of working together for nutrition as “complex with regard to research and programming; and complex and challenging in communications.” Working together across sectors requires advocacy, negotiation, building alliances and navigating obstacles, in order to bring about win-win scenarios that can be realized in Ethiopia.
