Compact2025 begins roundtables in Bangladesh, Malawi, Rwanda and Ethiopia to address hunger and malnutrition

On 26 May 2016, the final of four roundtable discussions on Compact2025 took place in Malawi with State Vice President Dr Saulosi Klaus Chilima emphasising the need for Malawi to fight hunger and under nutrition. He stated that if it is not addressed, national and global development goals will not be achieved.

As part of the International Food Policy Research Institute initiative (IFPRI) Compact2025, the Roundtable discussions focused on how to end hunger and undernutrition by 2025 in focal countries—Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malawi. Attending the Roundtables were high-level representatives from government. Key actors from civil society, the private sector, development partner organizations, and research institutions also participated in the lively discussions, which focused on topics tailored to each country. In all countries, there was an urgent call for data, knowledge, and evidence-based guidance to accelerate the progress.

Bangladesh has made impressive progress in reducing hunger and undernutrition. How to accelerate this progress was discussed by a range of stakeholders at the Compact2025 roundtable discussion in Dhaka, Bangladesh on May 5 2016. Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen opened the Compact2025 roundtable discussion in Ethiopia, where progress in reducing hunger and undernutrition must be accelerated to reach the 2025 goal. Rwandan Prime Minister Anastase Murekezi discussed the need to address these challenges during the Compact2025 roundtable discussion in Kigali, Rwanda on March 24 2016, saying “We can’t afford to lag behind when other countries are successful in fighting malnutrition”. He reinforced the importance for all stakeholders to work together to reach the 2025 goal, and committed to improve coordination for policy formulation and program implementation.
