The Compendium of Actions for Nutrition is now available!

In November 2016, the UN Network for SUN/REACH Secretariat launched the Compendium of Actions for Nutrition (CAN). The CAN was developed in consultation with United Nations partner agencies and is a key contribution towards achieving the objectives of the UN Network for SUN Strategy (2016-2020) and the overall SUN Movement Strategy and Roadmap (2016-2020).

The CAN includes matrices of potential multi-sectoral nutrition actions (both nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive actions), classified by the type of evidence available for them. These evidence categories include:
(1) synthesized evidence; (2) primary studies; and (3) practice-based studies. The compendium is also comprised of accompanying narratives that qualify the relevance and importance of these actions in supporting good nutrition, and bibliographies that substantiate the evidence classification. The CAN is a facilitation resource to help foster multi-sectoral dialogue at the country level, particularly on nutrition-related policy formulation and planning.

In addition, it identifies factors contributing to an enabling environment for nutrition. The CAN does not prescribe a specific set of nutrition actions. However, it does recognize that prioritization is critical and must be based on context, drawing upon a robust situation analysis, available evidence and country priorities in consultation with a range of stakeholders.

The CAN was launched by the SUN Global Coordinator in Rome following the 2016 REACH annual gathering on the eve of the International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition, alongside the 2016 SUN Movement Progress Report.
