The day of action was sponsored by Concern worldwide, World Vision, Plan Malawi and Progression. During the celebrations, Allan Chiyembekeza, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation noted that malnutrition was the greatest driver of poverty as the poorest were the most affected. He stressed the importance of political will and a multi-sectoral approach to tackle the problem of malnutrition.

“Developmental activities cannot progress if people in the country are malnourished, so it is very important to make sure our children are given proper food to enhance their growth for them to be productive citizens in the future.” – Allan Chiyembekeza, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Malawi Day of Action for Nutrition 2015.

Also speaking at the event, Member of Parliament for the area, Bon Kalindo said people need constant reminders on the importance of eating healthy foods. Among other activities during the day were a solidarity walk from Chitakale trading center to Mulanje Boma Park where the event took place and a football match between Azam Tigers and Mulanje select. Nutrition Global day of action is an annual event in Malawi and this year it was held under the theme “Keep the momentum: Nutrition at the core of Malawi’s socioeconomic agenda”.

“In 2013 Malawi made an agreement with the G8 alliance to make a difference by investing in nutrition activities and we are only making sure that the country fulfills its promise.” Tisungane Zimpita, CSONA
