On 17 October 2014, a media seminar about the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) was held in Accra, Ghana for journalists from private and public media. The event was organised by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The key messages for the journalists who attended were about the importance of the upcoming event and how media can help to shape the landscape of nutrition for development.

At the meeting, Dr Lamourdia Thiombiano, FAO Representative to Ghana explained that over the years, nutrition information had become abundant and easily available. This was a result of the increased research and development of information and communication technology.  For this reason, he felt it was  important for journalists to be well equipped to report information that would be useful for the public.

Nutrition advocacy through effective media reporting will help public and policy makers become well informed about health risks and the impacts of malnutrition on communities and the country’s development.

Dr Bernard Otabil, GNA Chief Executive Officer said that in realizing the critical role of agriculture in the nation’s socio-economic development, the agency established the New Media Partnership for Accelerated Rural Development (NEMPARD). NEMPARD reportage focuses on agriculture, health and education.  The agency, according to Mr. Otabil, has also created a network of journalists against hunger and malnutrition.
