The Scaling Up Nutrition Symposium was held on 5-6 November 2012, at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi and attended by about 300 delegates representing Government ministries, Kenya’s 47 counties, the private sector, donors, UN agencies (FAO, WHO and UNICEF), the World Bank, USAID, regional bodies, NGOs, CBOs and the media.

The purpose of the symposium – under the theme “Nutrition is key, take up your role, Act now” – was to launch the SUN Movement after Kenya was formally accepted by the UN as the 30th country to join SUN. A video-taped special message from the UN Special Representative for Food and Nutrition, David Nabaro was presented by UNICEF’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Mr El Hadj As Sy.

The Minister for Public Health and Sanitation, Hon. Beth Mugo officially launched Kenya’s Nutrition Action Plan (2012-2017). Ms. Mugo highlighted the key role of nutrition in Kenya’s implementation of the MDGs and Vision 2030, which aims to transform Kenya into a globally competitive and prosperous nation with a high quality of life for all by 2030. Delegates committed themselves to the implementation of the Nutrition Action Plan by signing a specially-designed roll of cloth with the symposium theme that will continue to be signed for the next few years, and by supporting a Declaration of commitment to the key action points in Kenya’s Nutrition Action Plan. County delegates will further develop county versions of the Action Plan by June 2013.

The UK Government, through its development agency, the Department for International Development (DfID), has committed Sterling Pounds 16.8 million (Ksh2.29 billion) to assist the Kenya Government upscale nutrition in three counties of Turkana, Wajir and Mandera. Additional multi-year funding to the nutrition sector will be also be provided by the European Commission though the SAHRE project in 2013.
