On 25 September 2014, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Malawi, Dr George Chaponda spoke on behalf of the state’s president at the Zero Hunger event held on the side-lines of the United Nations General Assembly. He said Malawi is experiencing food insecurity mostly due to climate change that has significantly reduced production and access to food.  The government is, however, committed to addressing both food and nutrition insecurity through the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and farm input subsidy programmes.

Mr Chaponda said that the Government of Malawi realizes that nutrition is a crosscutting issue which requires multi-sectoral approach. This is why the government has established the Department of Nutrition, HIV and Aids to coordinate nutrition. The Department provides policy direction, guidance, oversight, and creates implementation structures and high level advocacy. The government  has also integrated the national nutrition policy and strategic plan in key sectoral ministries namely Ministry of Education, Agriculture, Health, Local Government, Gender and Information, Culture and Tourism.
