Two new nutrition reports explore the role of smallholder agriculture in improving nutrition and donor financing for nutrition. Small Scale, Big Impact: Smallholder Agriculture’s Contribution to Better Nutrition commissioned by the UK Hunger Alliance (HA) and written by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), reveals findings that suggest that smallholder agricultural development that is environmentally sustainable, can dramatically reduce poverty and hunger.

The Aid Financing Landscape for Nutrition report, published by Development Initiatives focuses on funding flows on nutrition from existing donors. The report concludes that current volumes, while increasing, remain at odds with the scale of need. In 2011, aid to basic nutrition was only 0.4% of total official development assistance. At an aggregate level, basic nutrition spending is targeted at 36 countries where 90% of stunted children live. However, the distribution of aid within those 36 countries does not reflect need.
