Niger’s government commits that efforts will be accelerated across sectors to empower all women by 2030

On 8 March 2016, the Government of Niger celebrated International Women’s Day with an official ceremony at the Palais des Congrès in Niamey. Niger’s Minister of Population, Promotion and Protection of Women, Ms. Kafa Rekiatou Christelle Jackou and United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Fopde Ndiaye, attended the event to join representatives from government and civil society.

Ms Jackou reiterated the government’s commitment to step it up for gender equality and shared that every year, this day provides an opportunity for women to reflect and take action on the theme. In 2016, the theme chosen by the United Nations was “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.

In Niger, women representatives in parliament went from 10% in 2010 to 15% in 2014 and efforts will be accelerated across sector to empower all women by 2030.
