From 3 to 6 May 2017, SUN Movement Coordinator Gerda Verburg and a delegation from the SUN Movement Secretariat participated in a series of high level meetings to support Mozambique’s nutrition agenda. According to the Technical Secretariat for Nutritional Security (SETSAN), more than two out of five children under five living in Mozambique suffer from chronic malnutrition.

Mozambique has been a member of the SUN Movement since 2011 and has made great strides in progress towards the four strategic objectives of the Movement. The technical coordination body, SETSAN, is housed within the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and is driven by the leadership of Minister José Pacheco and the Director of SETSAN, Edna Possolo, who is also the SUN Government Focal Point.

I assure you of His Excellency the President’s commitment to ending malnutrition in Mozambique. We are ready to dynamise Mozambique’s capacity to fight hunger”

José Pacheco, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Mozambique.

In support of the visit, United Nations Resident Coordinator, Marcia  de Castro, recognised the importance of nutrition to the efforts of the United Nations agencies in Mozambique to deliver as one and stressed the importance of nutrition in achieving the pillars of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework.

During the visit, the delegation met with high-level leaders to encourage the continued investment in nutrition across all sectors. The visit coincided with Mozambique’s multistakeholder platform forum which brought together representatives from the civil society, United Nations, business and donor networks in addition to representatives from the media. The meeting was led by Ms. Possolo who gave a detailed update on the progress being made across the country and how each stakeholder group is contributing to this progress.
