Parliamentarians from 20 countries participating in the 2019 Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Global Gathering in Nepal 4-7 November 2019 jointly signed a pledge where they committed to take action on nutrition ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Nutrition For Growth Summit and beyond. Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and member of the SUN Movement Lead Group, took the lead in signing the document.

In the pledge, the parliamentarians recognised the critical importance of addressing malnutrition in all its forms through a coordinated multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder approach, and the crucial role of parliaments in the fight against malnutrition.

Parliamentarians committed to: encourage their governments to allocate the necessary budget for nutrition to achieve national nutrition targets and to promote and implement policy, legislative and regulatory measures aiming to tackle malnutrition in all its forms – including through applying a food systems approach across the food value chain, and by ensuring nutrition is integrated in national UHC polices and plans, in alignment with the most recent IPU parliamentary resolution on Universal Health Coverage which was adopted at the 141st IPU Assembly in October 2019.

They further committed to encourage their governments to make ambitious financial and policy commitments for nutrition at the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit in December 2020 and to use their oversight mandate to hold governments accountable for delivering on their commitments.

Parliamentarians will collaborate with SUN Government Focal Points and SUN Networks, and with national, regional and global parliamentary networks and alliances for nutrition to realize these commitments for the benefits of children, families and communities.

The SUN Global Gathering brought together parliamentarians from 20 countries, alongside representatives from governments, civil society, donors, United Nations agencies, private sector partners, academia, media and youth.
