On 17 March 2015, the Philippines Department of Social Welfare Secretary, Corazon Juliano-Soliman, met with World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin, who is also a SUN Movement Lead Group Member. They explored ways to enhance their partnership in disaster preparedness and support for communities in Central Mindanao. The meeting was held in connection with the 3rd United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (3WCDRR) in Japan. The Secretary is the head of the Philippine delegation at the event and will co-chair a working session on Preparedness for Effective Response with the WFP Executive Director.

During the meeting, Soliman acknowledged the support of WFP after Typhoons “Yolanda” and “Hagupit” and their support of Department of Social Welfare and Development programs in conflict-affected areas. Examples of support include nutritional support through provisions of micronutrient-fortified, ready-to-use food which helps to bridge essential nutrient gaps among the most vulnerable children and women. WFP also provides support through programs and infrastructure that will help to increase the food security of households and communities; and capacity building to enhance the capabilities of communities and government agencies on disaster preparedness and response.
