Process reviews of agriculture-nutrition education in Cambodia and Malawi published by FAO

In February 2016, the Food and Agriculture Organization published detailed and thorough process reviews of two agriculture-nutrition education projects that aimed to improve infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices using local foods – one in Malawi, and one in Cambodia. Each project delivered IYCF nutrition education through community-based caregiver groups, and food-based messages through farmer field schools.

The reviews themselves provide insight for program designers and managers considering similar projects, highlighting direct quotes from focus groups and interview participants on aspects of formative research, training-of-trainers, community participation & ownership, education materials, family environments, and program coordination.

Improving complementary feeding in Malawi

The Malawi Process review report describes good practices, lessons learned as well as challenges and successes of the “Improving food security and nutrition policies and programme outreach” (IFSN) (2008-2015) project that linked nutrition education with food security actions. The report provides insights into the functioning of local delivery platforms for improving young child nutrition, strategies for behaviour change communication in the family and community, intersectoral collaboration, and monitoring and evaluation, and can serve to inform future programmes and policy

Improving complementary feeding in North-Western Cambodia

The Cambodia Process review report describes good practices, lessons learned, and challenges and successes of the “Improving food security and market linkages for smallholders in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear” (MALIS) (2011-2015) project that links nutrition education with food security actions. The report provides insights into the functioning of local delivery platforms for improving young child nutrition, strategies for behaviour change communication in the family and community, intersectoral collaboration, and monitoring and evaluation, and can serve to inform future programmes and policy.
