Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire exchange experiences in converging nutrition interventions
From 13 to 17 December 2016, a delegation from Côte d’Ivoire embarked on a learning exchange with colleagues in Senegal on the topic of converging nutrition interventions. Convergence across sectors is a priority area for Côte d’Ivoire’s National Multi-sector Nutrition Plan (Plan National Multisectoriel de Nutrition 2016-2020). The learnings from the visit will help inform the delegation on decentralising the plan to regional, departmental, communal and village level nutrition committees.

From 13 to 17 December 2016, a delegation from Côte d’Ivoire embarked on a learning exchange with colleagues in Senegal on the topic of converging nutrition interventions. Convergence across sectors is a priority area for Côte d’Ivoire’s National Multi-sector Nutrition Plan (Plan National Multisectoriel de Nutrition 2016-2020). The learnings from the visit will help inform the delegation on decentralising the plan to regional, departmental, communal and village level nutrition committees.
Joining Dr. Patricia Ngoran-Theckly, Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council who is also the SUN Government Technical Focal Point, were participants from multiple sectors including agriculture, health and fisheries. Participants represented regions, districts, mayors, the Chamber of Kings and Traditional Chiefs and also a representative from the World Food Programme. This diverse delegation embodied the objectives of the mission.
The learning exchange was hosted by the Executive Office of the National Cell for the Fight Against Malnutrition (Cellule de Lutte Contre la Malnutrition) and included field visits to beneficiary communities to review the implementation of nutrition programmes. Nutrition specific programmes include measuring nutrition indicators, exclusive breastfeeding education and vitamin A supplementation. Nutrition sensitive programmes include improving access to clear water, handwashing communication, sustainable toilet and wastewater systems and safety net programmes which help to ensure dietary diversity.
A feature of the exchange was the in depth analyses of coordination mechanisms in Senegal and the different role principle actors play – from technical nutritionists to women’s associations.
