On 17 May 2014, the Federal Republic of Somalia became the 52nd country to join the SUN Movement. On behalf of the Government, a letter of commitment was sent by Dr. Mohamed Abdi Farah, Director General of the Ministry of Health and Human Services. It highlighted the importance of improving nutrition in Somalia and identified some key developments in recent years which show increased recognition by the Government for integrated actions to address malnutrition.

Efforts in recent years have resulted in increased access to nutrition services through much of the country. The following national plans have also been developed:

–          A Nutrition Strategy

–          A Micronutrient Strategy

–          An Infant and Young Child Feeding Strategy

–          A Costed Plan of Action for Nutrition

The leadership of Somalia is deeply committed to scaling up nutrition investments and already has established strong cohesion between the government, donors and implementing partners. A multi-stakeholder platform for nutrition will be set up. The Government of Somalia is eager to share experiences and learn from other SUN countries on acceleration of efforts for scaling up nutrition.
