Stunting in Kenya Highlighted in CNN Feature

On CNN’s ‘Amanpour’ renowned correspondent Christiane Amanpour featured an interview with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and famed singer/songwriter Angelique Kidjo, framed around her recent visit to Kenya where stunting that impacts more than 2 million children. The Government of Kenya recently confirmed its intention to join the SUN Movement.

On CNN’s Amanpour. renowned correspondent  Christiane Amanpour featured an interview with UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and famed singer/songwriter  Angelique Kidjo. The interview, aired on 16 October was framed around Kidjo’s recent visit to Kenya where CNN followed the singer to capture the critical problem of child stunting that impacts more than 2 million children in the East African country.

She emphasized the importance of seeking solutions at the community level and noted that Kenyan government officials were concerned with the long-term damage caused by poor nutrition.

The Government of Kenya recently confirmed its intention to join the SUN Movement. In a letter to the SUN Coordinator, the Honourable Beth Mugo, Minister for Public Health and Sanitation said that Kenya was addressing the challenges of malnutrition through adopting strategic policies and instigating multi-sectoral, legislative and constitutional measures. She further indicated that joining the SUN Movement and improving nutrition would yield returns for the Kenyan people through mortality reduction and by contributing to livelihoods and overall economic growth. SUN will be launched in Kenya by the Government at a National Nutrition Symposium on 5 November.
