SUN Movement announces cancellation of 2025 SUN Global Gathering
The SUN Movement Executive Committee has agreed to cancel the 2025 SUN Global Gathering, which was scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from 4 to 6 November 2025. This decision was reached after careful consideration of several compounding factors — most notably the overall decline in development assistance, the congested global calendar around the proposed dates (including COP30 and the Second World Summit for Social Development). These challenges have led to a projected drop in participation of over 50% of expected delegates from the 67 SUN Member Countries. Such a reduction would severely impact the inclusive, multi-stakeholder nature of the Global Gathering, which is fundamentally built on shared learning and exchange among SUN countries.
The Global Gathering is the Movement’s flagship event — an opportunity for government representatives, civil society, donors, UN agencies, and private sector partners from SUN Member Countries to come together, reflect on progress, and align around nutrition priorities. The decision to cancel it was not taken lightly.
The SUN Movement Secretariat is now working to inform all stakeholders and explore alternative ways to support country-level collaboration and learning. Updates on next steps will be shared in the coming weeks.
The Secretariat extends its sincere thanks to all members of the Global Gathering Programme Advisory Group and the Local Organising Committee for their commitment and contributions. It also acknowledges, with deep gratitude, the Government of the Republic of Rwanda and the NCDA for their strong support and readiness to host the SUN Movement in Kigali.
