The secretary of the Food and Nutrition Security Secretariat (SESAN), Juan Carlos Carías, and technical under-secretary Maira Ruano met with Mar Maestre, a Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement consultant, who is visiting Guatemala to carry out a study on the design of an Effective Multi-sectoral and Multi-stakeholder Platform for Guatemala for the development of reports and practical information tools at inter-institutional and national levels.

Mar Maestre said that, “the purpose of the visit is to study the National Food and Nutritional Security System in Guatemala. We want to understand what the multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder platform is like, what the elements of its success are, how it works with different stakeholders and how these are coordinated. Once we have done this learning, the goal is to design tools to strengthen the platform and the work that SESAN does every day”.

She stressed that it is very important for the SUN Movement to find out how the platform works, since this is how it will be best possible to support the work done by the Government of Guatemala on food and nutrition security. She added that the study is being conducted in five countries worldwide, but only Guatemala has been selected in Central America, on account of its having a Multi-sectoral and Multi-stakeholder platform.

The meeting was also attended by the Director of Institutional Strengthening of SESAN, René Martínez Farfán; Julissa Cifuentes, Director of External Cooperation; Oscar Flores, Director of Communication and Information; Otto Velásquez, Director of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of SESAN, and by Secretariat staff.

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement is an initiative led by 60 countries that are working to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms, based on the principle that everyone has a right to food and good nutrition.

Since 2010, the Movement has inspired a new way of working collaboratively to end malnutrition in all its forms, uniting representatives of governments of SUN Countries, civil society, the United Nations, donors, businesses and researchers.
