SUN Movement Launch in Sierra Leone

The Vice President (VP) of the republic, Chief Samuel Sam Sumana on behalf of His Excellency Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone launched the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Initiative on 2 October 2012 in Freetown.

The SUN Movement in Sierra Leone was formally launched by the Vice President, Chief Samuel Sam Sumana in October 2012. At the event relevant government ministers, United Nations representatives and civil society leaders signed a declaration of commitment to the countries efforts to scale up nutrition.

Speaking at the launch, the country’s Chief Medical Officer, Sidiki Dao, said, “Malnutrition still remains an important concern and contributor to infant sickness and death in the country and poses a serious challenge to the nation’s manpower and development.”

High-level leadership in Sierra Leone revealed their commitment to the SUN Movement as key to overcoming challenges posed to the country due to malnutrition. “Today’s launch will demonstrate my commitment in combating malnutrition,” said President Koroma, asserting that the government will continue efforts to reduce child mortality and improve nutritional practices country-wide.First Lady Madam Sia Nyama Koroma said, “the launch is a step in the right direction.” She added that fighting malnutrition is key to reducing hunger and poverty in the country. 

According to Dr. Sam Sesay, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security, the key components of the nation’s food and nutrition strategy are ensuring the availability, affordability and accessibility of food. Dr. Sesay cited the benefits of joining the SUN Movement, including opportunities for technical assistance and access to a global network of support.

The national SUN launch builds upon ongoing progress towards scaling up nutrition in Sierra Leone, including the recently affirmed National Food and Nutrition Security Policy Implementation Plan for 2012-2016.
