The three day Food and Nutrition Summit, starting 18 February 2014, brought together over 350 delegates and was focused on the importance of the first 1000 days. The summit also released the report “cost of hunger” which reveals that undernutrition in Rwanda costs the country US $820 million (504 billion Rwanda francs) annually.

Minister of Health Agnes Binagwaho opened the National Food and Nutrition summit with the observation that the problem of malnutrition is not related to the economy but lack of knowledge and good nutrition practices. Dr. Binagwaho said progress has been possible due to the holistic approaches that brought together various ministries in the social cluster for necessary interventions.
