On 24 July 2017, UN chiefs met with Prime Minister Ahmed bin Dagher during a visit to Yemen and witnessed the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the country. They committed to step up combined efforts of their agencies to help the people of Yemen.

The high-level delegation included Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme and Anthony Lake, Executive Director of UNICEF, who is also the Chair of the SUN Movement Lead Group.

In their Joint Statement following the visit, they said, “The country is on the brink of famine, with over 60 per cent of the population not knowing where their next meal will come from. Nearly 2 million Yemeni children are acutely malnourished. Malnutrition makes them more susceptible to cholera; diseases create more malnutrition. A vicious combination.”
