On April 27th 2015, United Nations (UN) Women launched its global report “Progress of the World’s Women 2015-2016: Transforming Economies, Realizing Rights” and called for governments around the world to develop effective workforce participation strategies. In the report, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, stated that the report’s findings and recommendations underline the need to respect and promote the specific rights and needs of women and girls, and to integrate gender equality in all dimensions of sustainable development.
The report identifies that there is evidence to show that when women have a greater voice and participation in public administration, public resources are more likely to be allocated to human development priorities including child health, nutrition and access to employment.
The report also highlights the importance of community workers with a story from Violet Shivutse. The story shares the first steps in a journey which lead to the formation of the Shibuye Community Health Workers in Kenya. Since the group’s inception, it has expanded its work to include health issues such as measles, diarrhea, and providing advice on sanitation, good nutrition and family planning.
