On 8 March 2016, the United Nations Women’s agency (UN Women) held a public gathering to raise awareness of women’s rights in honour of International Women’s Day. The event at the Palais de la Culture in Bamako, brought together over 3,000 people from the government, development partners, civil society organisation and citizens. The event called for all to sign on and take action towards women’s rights.
UN Women also participated in TV and radio programmes to advocate for gender equality throughout the months of February and March, and published advertisements in newspapers to generate public awareness.
In November 2015, the Mali National Assembly adopted a law for a 30 per cent quote to help promote gender equality in the appointment and election of officials. The Minister for the Advancement of Women, Children and Family believes that this day is an opportunity to take stock of progress towards the development and the emergence of women in the country.
The Embassy of the United States in Mali also presented 30 inspiring Malian women throughout the month in honour of International Women’s Day. On 8 March, Dr. Houleymata Diarra, USAID ASSIST Project Chief of Party was announced as one of 30 inspiring Malian woman.
