World Health Day recognises the importance of food safety across SUN countries

On 7^th April 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognised World Health Day with the theme “From farm to plate, make food safe”. This comes as new data is shared about the harm caused by foodborne illnesses and the threats it has on global safety. The day highlighted the challenges and opportunities associated with food safety and the need for coordinated, cross border action across the entire food supply-chain.

View the different ways the day was recognised across SUN countries;

• The Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeia (CS-SUNN) with the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) held a joint meeting to mark the event under the theme “Safe and Nutrition Food a panacea to Fighting Malnutrition and Diseases among Infants, Young, Children and Women of Reproductive Age”.
• The Haiti Nutrition Security Program (funded by the USAID Feed the Future Initiative) shares an inspiring story about one of their Mother Leaders. A Mother Leader is a community leader chosen by the community to undergo training to empower women in their communities.
• The Vietnam Food Administration worked with WHO to promote people’s health through ensuring food safety, including the development of this video:

• The African Development Bank (AfBD) joined the WHO to commemorate World Health Day and marked the occasion by hosting the quarterly nutrition donor coordination meeting in Abidjan. Alongside UNICEF, the AdDB will co-lead the donor coordination group in Côte d’Ivoire for the year 2015-2016.
