On 18th June 2015, eight world leaders were recognised for the steps they have taken towards improving gender equality. Three of the leaders were from SUN Countries Indonesia, Malawi and Rwanda. In Indonesia, President Joko Widodo promotes the increase of women in senior leadership positions and women representation in parliament. He is also engaged in fighting violence against women and aims to extend national health insurance coverage to reproductive and maternal health care. In Malawi, President Arthur Peter Mutharika has committed to end Child Marriage and boost women economic empowerment. In Rwanda, President Paul Kagame is committed to have equal access to technology and increase girls’ enrollment in technology fields.
The announcements were part of UN Women’s IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative, where 10 heads of state, 10 CEOs, and 10 university presidents commit to taking tangible steps to achieve gender equality, as part of the United Nations HeForShe movement, which launched in 2014.
