On 19 November 2015, in commemoration of World Toilet Day, the Lusaka government announced the provision for the construction of at least 500 toilets in the 2016 national budget to improve sanitary conditions. This was announced by Stephen Kampyongo, Minister of Local Government and Housing at an event to promote sanitation for all as a global development goals. The toilets would be for public places such as schools, health centres, markets and bus stations.

“As you are aware, diarrhoeal diseases, which are also associated with a high risk of malnutrition and stunting, take a huge socio-economic toll on society,” – Stephen Kampyongo, Minister of local Government and Housing.

The theme “nutrition and toilets” was highlighted at the event and emphasis was placed on the need to invest in the construction of sanitation facilities to prevent communicable diseases. The minister said that his ministry was working with the National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) to implement water and sanitation measures under the 1,000 critical days programme.
