“I have seen first-hand the consequences of malnutrition in our communities. Every year, nearly 300 deaths of children can be traced to malnutrition in Samfya District. These are children who should grow up to be the leaders of tomorrow,” – Chief Mwansakombe

The traditional leader urged the government to maximise coverage and access of nutrition programmes and to have nutrition well represented in the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urged the support of other Zambian representatives involved with the United Nations SDGs process. The Permanent Secretary mentioned that the government was committed to ensuring that malnutrition is comprehensively addressed and urged the people of Samfya to form groups to help channel the delivery of nutrition services.

During the event, Esnart Mutale, a resident and mother of five in the Kasuba community, said that a community approach to addressing malnutrition is needed in the Samfya District because health facilities are not adequately equipped with supplies and trained staff to address malnutrition.

William Chilufya from CSO-SUN said that the Global Day of Action (GDA) is the day civil society across the globe speak out together for a more just and fair world. He highlighted the power of coming together and making the case for nutrition development and advocating for strong action by national governments and local and global leaders. He reminded participants of the need for the government to fulfill their nutrition for growth commitments.
