As Support to the Multi-Sector Nutrition Plan (MSNP) kicked off in Bardiya, Nepal, the HERD team with the support of local field supervisors paid a visit to Gulariya, Bardiya on December 3, 2016 to understand the real context of nutrition in these Disadvantaged Group (DAG) identified sites.

On 19 December 2016, the UN Network for SUN and the SUN Movement Secretariat launched a checklist for good national nutrition plans, the first of its kind. There is strong consensus that harmonised support to national processes is a prerequisite for sustainable development. However, no standards or guidance has been made available to define what constitutes quality nutrition plans, which has led to the development of this Checklist.

On 3 November 2016, the third National Nutrition Day was celebrated in Cambodia with a workshop under the theme ” Improved Hygiene and Nutrition make Children Grow From Evidence to Impact”. The workshop was jointly organised by the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) through the Council for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) along with the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Health, in partnership with USAID, UNICEF, FAO, WFP, GIZ and the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance in Cambodia (SUN CSA Cambodia) coordinated by Helen Keller International (HKI), with support from Save the Children, Plan International, Action Against Hunger, Samaritan’s Purse, Medical Teams International, Malteser International, GSF and WSSCC.

The UN Network for SUN has launched a Compendium of Actions for Nutrition (CAN): A list of possible nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive actions including multi-sectoral governance.

Scaling Up Nutrition Movement November Newsletter featuring the 2016 SUN Movement Annual Progress Report

As the year draws to a close, and we are gearing up for the holiday season in many parts of the world, we launch the Annual Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Progress Report, which takes stock of many successes and sets the scene for our next New Year’s Resolutions. One final thing on my ‘to do’ list for 2016 is to mark Human Rights Day, which focuses on standing up for someone’s rights.

On 21 November 2016, the SUN Donor Network held an in person meeting in Geneva to prioritise efforts in line with the new SUN Movement Strategy and Roadmap (2016-2020). Maren Lieberum, Lead Network Facilitator, provided feedback to the Network about the capacity strengthening workshop held the week prior with the Movement’s support system.

On 22 November 2016, a briefing on the 2016 SUN Movement Annual Progress Report was held with Permanent Missions in Geneva. The pre-launch event of the report gave the opportunity for SUN Movement Coordinator, Gerda Verburg, to share progress made towards eradicating malnutrition across 57 SUN Countries over the past year.

On 21 November 2016, members of the SUN Movement Senior Donor Officials Group met in Geneva to renew their vision and roles to ensure optimal alignment with the new SUN Movement Strategy and Roadmap (2016-2020).

Nutrition for women in pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and over the first two years of the child’s life is of utmost importance for the survival, health and development of mothers and their children. This research brief on nutrition and health integration across the Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health continuum in Pakistan is part of a series developed by RESULTS UK.

While Myanmar has been developing rapidly over the last few decades, the rates of child malnutrition continue to be worryingly high. UNICEF data and the results of the newly released 2015-16 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) show that the prevalence of stunting at the national level decreased from 41% in 2003 to 29% in 2015.

From 23 to 24 November 2016, the Kenyan Academia and Research SUN Network held their inaugural National Nutrition Symposium at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi. The symposium focused on research, policy and program related themes that reflect innovative and new thinking which can be translated into action to improve food, nutrition and public health practice.

From 9 to 11 November 2016, HarvestPlus Nigeria held a three-day event that brought together nearly 5,000 stakeholders from research institutions and experts from agriculture, health, education, science & technology and trade & commerce. This was the second edition of the fair which took place at Tinapa venue and the Calabar International Convention Center in the Cross River State of Nigeria.

On 18 November 2016, VALID Nutition, a member of the SUN Business Network, launched a new Ready-to-Use Complementary Food (RUCF) in Lilongwe, Malawi. The product was formally launched by Dr. Peter Kumpalume, MP and Minister for Health, Malawi. The RUCF, also known as Small Quantity Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement (LNS-SQ), is approved by the Malawi Bureau of Standards and conforms fully to UNICEF specifications and standards for LNS-SQ (S0000245 Fortified spread, sachet 20g/CAR-546).

From 14 – 18 November 2016, a two-day orientation was held in Kathmandu with Central and District teams working on Nepal’s Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Plan (MSNP) to better collaborate them on its implementation.
