Nutrition for Growth Summit

Nutrition for Growth Summit

November 15, 2024 - Last update: April 25, 2025

The Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit, is a global pledging moment for nutrition hosted every four years by the Paralympic/Olympic host country

Hosted by the Government of France on 27-28 March 2025, the N4G Paris aimed to:

  • Put nutrition at the center of the sustainable development agenda
  • Make the fight against all forms of malnutrition a universal cause
  • Create continuity between N4G summits and in the commitments for good nutrition
  • Mobilize ambitious new political and financial commitments for nutrition

For SUN countries, the N4G Summit provided a strategic opportunity to prioritize nutrition and make tangible contributions to both national and global health and development goals.

In 2021, the N4G Tokyo Summit mobilized over $27 billion through 396 registered commitments from 181 stakeholders across 78 countries, 57 of them SUN countries. The 2025 Summit was a crucial opportunity to build on that momentum.

In 2025, the N4G Paris Summit mobilized closed to $28 billion through over 400 registered commitments (final number still to be confirmed) made by the 127 delegations that attended (including the governments of 106 countries, in addition to numerous international organizations, civil society organizations, development banks, philanthropic organizations, research institutions, and businesses).

2025 is a significant year to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Agenda’s target of ending malnutrition by 2030. It marks the end of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition and the renewal of the World Health Assembly (WHA) targets. The second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktake will also take place in 2025.

N4G commitments refer to a set of pledges made by governments, businesses, and civil society organizations to improve nutrition worldwide, particularly for vulnerable populations, including children and women.

N4G Paris was a multi-stakeholder summit, advocating for ambitious financial and political commitments and fostering dialogue among diverse actors from around the world, including governments, international organizations, research institutions, civil society organizations, philanthropies, private sector entities, and more.

Making commitments at the N4G Summit is a valuable means for countries to galvanize political support, secure resources, and foster partnerships that are essential to achieving nutrition and development objectives. By making N4G commitments countries can:

Strengthen Political Will: Committing at N4G demonstrates high-level political will and leadership on nutrition, signaling to both domestic and international audiences that nutrition is a national priority.

Attract Funding and Resources: Public commitments help mobilize domestic and international financing by showcasing the country’s commitment to addressing malnutrition, attracting both public and private sector investment.

Set Clear, Measurable Goals: Making commitments provides countries with an opportunity to set specific, measurable targets, ensuring accountability and encouraging a more strategic, outcomes-focused approach to reducing malnutrition.

Adhere to a clear set of Principles of Engagement: N4G summits empower all commitment-makers to engage through defined parameters, guided by WHO recommendations, to prevent conflicts of interest, to protect public health objectives, and to promote healthy and sustainable diets.

Enhance Accountability: The N4G Summit is also a moment to assess progress against past commitments, ensure transparency, and address any gaps in commitments before developing new ones. The Nutrition Accountability Framework (NAF) enables all commitment-makers to register commitments and log progress.

Foster Partnerships: The N4G platform facilitates partnerships by linking countries with global nutrition stakeholders, including multilateral organizations, civil society organizations, young people, UN agencies and private sector partners, encouraging collaboration on programs and shared goals.

Integrate Nutrition with Broader Development Goals: N4G commitments enable countries to align nutrition goals with other pressing issues, such as climate resilience, food systems, gender equality and universal health coverage, driving integrated policy solutions that can benefit multiple sectors.

Showcase Progress and Innovation: Countries can share success stories, innovations, and effective practices in nutrition at the N4G Summit, enhancing their leadership role and providing models for other nations.

All the information regarding the registration of commitment is available on this page, which outlines the questions that you will be asked to submit new commitment(s) into the Nutrition Accountability Framework (NAF), the official mechanism for registering commitments for the N4G Summit. Please note that it is for planning purposes only, to allow you to prepare your responses before signing in to fill the online survey form and submit your commitment.

The online form is accessible - once you have made an account and then signed into the NAF - from the starting page (if this your first time making a commitment) or from “Commitments” in the header menu if you have made a commitment before.

Commitment registration is valid only if you sign into the NAF and complete and submit the commitment registration online survey form.

Visit the official NAF website and watch this tutorial for more information.

The SUN Movement Secretariat and its affiliated networks (SUN Civil Society Network, SUN Donor Network, SUN Business Network, and UN-Nutrition) play a pivotal role in ensuring that countries uphold their nutritional commitments and are prepared for the coming Summit.

With support from EU4SUN and C4N, the SUN Movement is supporting countries through a series of regional workshops and tailored dialogues that will:

  • Review each country’s 2021 N4G commitments, assess progress made, and identify any challenges in tracking and implementing them.
  • Raise awareness of the importance of accountability and the development of SMART commitments among stakeholders.
  • Help countries in the N4G commitment-making process through a collaborative approach that includes government, civil society, private sector, and community voices, ensuring commitments are inclusive, transparent, and widely supported.
  • Highlight the importance of setting ambitious, evidence-based goals that align with national and regional development priorities.
  • Share successful practices in areas like food systems, climate change, resilience, health, social protection, data systems, budget analysis, nutrition financing, and gender equity.
  • Support and encourage country-led discussions on setting new commitments.
  • Promote alignment between existing national nutrition plans and global goals, including World Health Assembly (WHA) targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Advocacy for Country-Led Nutrition Financing: A New Consensus

At a mere 0.5% of ODA, global nutrition financing continues to be inadequate to meet growing needs. Recent aid cuts pose major challenges. Progress to achieve the Global Nutrition Targets and the SDG2 targets must be accelerated and resourced. This session will bring together advocates and nutrition stakeholders to discuss how we collectively build a new consensus to increase nutrition financing, including simplifying our narrative, using messages to reach beyond the nutrition community, and aligning behind country nutrition plans, priorities, and policies. This interactive session will provide an opportunity to discuss and advance a strategic direction for nutrition finance advocacy, based on recommendations from new research, with case studies of mapping advocacy needs at the country-level, showcasing the high-level and country-level work that can be done. Building on meetings in London in April 2024, this event seeks to catalyze a new consensus for nutrition advocacy to increase financing beyond N4G.Advocacy for Country-Led Nutrition Financing: A New Consensus

Francophone Africa - Regional Dialogue on Improving Access to Locally Produced Nutritious and Safe Complementary Foods in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

The European Commission, Micronutrient Forum and the World Food Program (WFP), as co-hosts, in close collaboration with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), GRET and ATNI (Access to Nutrition Initiative) are organizing a ‘Regional Dialogue on Improving Access to Locally Produced Nutritious and Safe Complementary Foods in Low- and Middle-Income Countries’ from December 1 - 3, 2024 in Dakar, Senegal, strategically coinciding with the Foire Internationale de Dakar (FIDAK).

The organization of this meeting is financed by the European Union and generously supported by Expertise France through their EU4SUN project.

The meeting agenda will adopt a systems approach and be highly interactive. Participants are expected to arrive on December 1, with a welcome reception and a visit to the locally produced nutritious food stand sponsored by WFP at FIDAK in the late afternoon and evening. The official discussions will take place on Monday, December 2 and Tuesday, December 3. The meeting agenda and pre-reads will be shared two weeks before the meeting. In continuum with the regional dialogue, WFP and the Senegalese Food and Nutrition Association (ANAS) are organizing a nutrition value chain fair and seminar at the FIDAK. By bringing nutrition into focus at this business fair, they aim to emphasize the need for locally produced, safe and nutritious foods to improve access to healthy meals and fight malnutrition. WFP and ANAS seek to strengthen food systems by supporting local producers and inspire innovative solutions to promote healthier food choices and improve food security for vulnerable communities across West Africa.

Partners

Objectives of the Meeting

This meeting will bring together stakeholders from across the food system to collaboratively:

  • Identify context-specific, evidence-based investment priorities and strategies for local commercial production of (fortified) foods for complementary feeding.

  • Foster partnerships between national and regional stakeholders by exchanging experiences, best practices, and lessons learned to promote continuous improvements in access to safe and nutritious local solutions.

  • Inform regional and country commitments for the Nutrition for Growth summit (N4G), hosted by the French Government in March 2025 in Paris, with the intent of creating an enabling policy environment, establishing programs and partnerships, discussing multi-sectoral linkages, and making investments to stimulate demand and accelerate the availability of locally produced nutritious and safe complementary foods (CF).

Expected Outcomes

This regional meeting will lay the groundwork for actionable strategies that can enhance food availability, affordability, and accessibility for vulnerable children. The discussions and recommendations of the meeting will inform and encourage regional and country commitments at the N4G Summit in Paris, in March 2025. Specifically, the meeting will be instrumental in:

  1. Establishing agreed-upon investment priorities for enhancing local production of safe and nutritious complementary foods (CF) to guide governments, donors, and the private sector.
  2. Delivering actionable policy recommendations for creating an enabling environment to support local CF production, with a focus on improving policy and regulatory frameworks, reducing supply chain barriers, and increasing access to finance.
  3. Strengthening public-private partnerships to support the development and distribution of locally produced nutritious CF.
