Food and Nutrition Security Project by GIZ in Malawi

“Colorful dishes, convincing hygiene practices, diverse kitchen gardens and an innovative nutrition hotline – the Malawi country package carries out activities in close consultation with partner organizations and government representatives. But how are they perceived by the population? Mothers from the districts of Dedza and Salima report in interviews on how they benefit from the village groups – so-called Care Groups – and local savings groups with a nutritional approach. A small farmer is planting a drought resistant sweet potato variety – food security measures that are incorporated into local development plans in a participative manner.

Dr. Alexander Kalimbira places the topic of food security and hygiene in the Malawian context, reporting on progress and current challenges. The Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience Programme is active in 11 African and Asian countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Togo, Yemen and Zambia. It works in close cooperation with national and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to mobilise all social forces. The programme thus makes a direct contribution towards global efforts to improve food and nutrition security, for instance by supporting governments as part of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. The programme coordinates its activities with local ministries and is linked with bilateral programmes run by German development cooperation. This ensures that the achieved results reinforce each other and that approaches are permanently integrated into local structures. Consulting firms are also involved in implementation.

The programme’s main target group comprises women of child-bearing age, pregnant women, nursing mothers and small children who are particularly affected by food and nutrition insecurity. The programme aims to improve their food and nutrition situation and resilience to food crises.
