GAIN event explores the issues of nutrition and food systems as urban populations increase
On 10 November 2016, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) together with the Global Health Centre, held an event in Geneva, Switzerland titled, “Protecting our Planet’s Health: Growing Cities, Poor Nutrition, What Can Be Done?”. The event provided a moment to highlight nutrition issues that may be faced by the four billion (and increasing) people in the world who live in cities. Almost a quarter of them live in slums and struggle to access a healthy and diverse diet.

On 10 November 2016, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) together with the Global Health Centre, held an event in Geneva, Switzerland titled, “Protecting our Planet’s Health: Growing Cities, Poor Nutrition, What Can Be Done?“. The event provided a moment to highlight nutrition issues that may be faced by the four billion (and increasing) people in the world who live in cities. Almost a quarter of them live in slums and struggle to access a healthy and diverse diet.
The panel discussion focused on how to improve the nutrition of vulnerable urban populations and included speakers:
- Gerda Verburg, Coordinator, Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement
- Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director, GAIN
- Ambassador Reinout Vos, Deputy Head of Mission, Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Geneva
- Katia Santos Dias Country Director, Mozambique, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
- Guillaume Taylor, Co-founder & Managing Partner, Quadia; Member, GAIN Board of Directors
The event built upon discussions from GAIN’s recent official side event of Habitat III “Good Governance for Healthy and Sustainable Urban Food Systems” that was co-sponsored together with Food Smart Cities for Development-an EU project coordinated by the City of Milan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. The Milano Urban Food Policy Pact whch was adopted by Mayors around the world in 2015 was also highlightedat the event.
