The 23rd Ordinary Session of the Summit of the African Union (AU) comprising Heads of State and Government, was held from 26 – 27 June 2014 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

At the summit, African leaders formally committed to a number of bold goals to reflect ‘The Vision of the Agriculture We Want’, including nutrition security for inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in Africa.

African heads of state and government appointed the King of Lesotho as a champion for nutrition at the summit. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Director General Jose Graziano da Silva met with King Letsie III at the sidelines of the summit where the King expressed his support for the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2).

The President of Benin, Thomas Yayi Boni reflects his views as a nutrition champion via an Op-ed. It was the decision of President Boni, when Benin was the chair of the AU in 2012 that declared 2014 as the “Year of Agriculture and Food Security”.

The focus on agriculture also coincides with the commemoration of 10 years since the African-owned Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) was endorsed by the AU Assembly.
