As at July 2014, thirty companies including national and international companies have pledged to introduce a nutrition workplace policy which includes support for breastfeeding mothers in the workplace. This commitment is an example of how businesses within the SUN Business Network are mobilising efforts for scaling up nutrition.

Nutrition in the workplace is critical, particularly in developing and emerging markets across Africa, Asia and Latin America. In these regions, there is a tremendous need and plenty of opportunity to improve the nutrition of working age adults, and their families. Increasingly, companies are recognizing that workplace nutrition interventions should be seen as a strategic investment with high returns in worker health and productivity.

The SUN Business Network has developed and launched a toolkit of best practice for nutrition in the workforce. This toolkit builds the case for investing in nutrition workplace programmes by;

  • Explaining nutrition policies (including maternity protection and breastfeeding support)
  • Providing recommendations for interventions
  • Offering examples of successful programmes in developed and developing countries
