SUN Movement announces 2024 Global Gathering to power the change in nutrition

July 27, 2023 - Last update: July 27, 2023

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement is thrilled to announce the 8th edition of its flagship event, the 2024 SUN Movement Global Gathering. This event will bring together nutrition actors from every corner of the world, serving as an impactful platform for collaboration, learning, and mobilization in the fight against malnutrition in all its forms.

Hosted by the Government of Rwanda, the SUN Global Gathering is scheduled to take place in Kigali, from 24th to 28th June 2024 under the theme "NutritiON: Power the Change".  With this slogan the Movement urges its members to embrace the power of nutrition to address several of the SDG’s.

The SUN Movement Global Gathering 2024 arrives at a pivotal moment. Critical milestones including the 2024 World Health Assembly targets, the conclusion of the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition, the Nutrition for Growth Summit in France and the 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are all on the horizon.

It also arrives at a time when the international community is facing heightened security and climate related challenges, with all the ramifications this means for global population movement, food production and distribution, development and humanitarian assistance. The timing of the gathering also bears significant relevance for the African continent, providing a platform to reflect on progress made through the African Union Year of Nutrition and the first decade of implementing the 2063 agenda.

Afshan Khan, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and SUN Movement Coordinator, emphasized the significance of the event. She stated:, "As we prepare to convene in Rwanda for the 2024 SUN Global Gathering under the theme 'NutritiON: Power the Change,' we stand at a critical juncture in actually reducing malnutrition, in all its forms, around the world. Malnutrition lies at the heart of many of our problems, and its amelioration is, therefore, often a key component to their solution. In spite of the increased challenges facing all of us today, I am optimistic, because we have the community; we have the tools; and in the SUN Movement we have the forum that brings every part of the international community together” on this vital issue. This means that we have the power to address the challenges and make real progress toward ending malnutrition for everyone, everywhere.   Let us seize this opportune moment to improve our world, by addressing one of its too often hidden ailments: malnutrition."

Since its inception, the SUN Movement has witnessed some tangible progress in the fight against malnutrition across its 65 member countries and four Indian states. Today’s climate, security, pandemic, and political challenges are, however, creating an environment that threatens to reverse years of progress.

The 2024 SUN Movement Global Gathering offers a unique opportunity to define a path forward, where nutrition is a part of the solution to some of these challenges.

Information on registration and participation will follow in the coming weeks.  Further updates and information will be available at the event webpage at https://scalingupnutrition.org/events/global-gathering/sun-global-gathering-2024
